How laser tattoo removal works
Selected laser wavelengths are absorbed by tattoo pigment and deliver short pulses that fragment ink particles. The body gradually processes some of those fragments between sessions. The aim is controlled fading while limiting injury to surrounding skin.
A laser is not chosen from tattoo colour alone. Skin tone, ink composition, whether the tattoo is professional or amateur, its age and depth, previous removal attempts and pre-existing scar tissue all influence settings and risk.
Assessment before the first session
The clinician examines colours, size, location, density, skin type, texture and existing scars. Medical history, medicines, pregnancy, tendency to raised scars, recent tanning and previous pigment changes are reviewed. A test spot may be considered when response or pigment risk is uncertain.
Cosmetic tattoos require particular caution because some pigments can darken after laser exposure. Multi-coloured tattoos may need different wavelengths, and certain pale, fluorescent or resistant colours may not clear fully.

Sessions and realistic expectations
Most tattoos need a series of sessions separated by enough time for skin recovery and biological clearance. A fixed number cannot be promised before observing response. Black and dark-blue pigment often responds more predictably than yellow, green, fluorescent or mixed inks, but individual outcomes vary.
Fading may be uneven, residual pigment may remain and the original tattoo may contain scar tissue that becomes more visible as ink lightens. Progress should be documented using consistent photographs rather than promises of complete removal.
Aftercare and recovery
Temporary whitening, redness, swelling, tenderness, pinpoint bleeding, blistering or crusting may occur depending on treatment intensity. Patients receive instructions for cleansing, dressings or ointment, sun protection, exercise, swimming and when to contact the clinic.
Picking crusts or blisters can increase infection, pigment-change and scarring risk. The next session should be delayed until the area has healed and the response has been reviewed.
Risks and reasons treatment may be postponed
Possible complications include burns, infection, prolonged redness, lightening or darkening of skin, texture change, scarring, allergic reaction and incomplete clearance. Active infection, open skin, recent tanning, uncontrolled medical conditions or medicines affecting healing may require postponement.
Creams and do-it-yourself removal kits do not provide a controlled substitute for laser assessment and can cause burns, rashes or scars.

Can every tattoo be completely removed?
