Dermal fillers are not one product

Fillers include different materials and physical properties designed for specific anatomical planes and treatment areas. A product suitable for one facial area may not be appropriate for another. The patient should know the brand, material, intended site and expected duration before injection.

Fillers differ from botulinum toxin, which reduces selected muscle activity. They also differ from skin boosters, although both categories may include hyaluronic-acid products.

What the consultation considers

Assessment considers facial proportions, movement, skin quality, previous filler, dental work, infection, allergies, bleeding risk, medicines, pregnancy status and expectations. Treatment may be postponed when skin near the injection site is inflamed or infected.

  • Exact filler and treatment indication
  • Injection plane and relevant anatomy
  • Expected duration and reversal options
  • Common risks and emergency warning signs

Procedure, recovery and duration

Filler is placed with a needle or cannula according to the product and plan. Swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and temporary asymmetry can occur. Final assessment may need to wait until early swelling settles.

Duration varies by material, area, amount and metabolism. Additional treatment should not be performed simply to chase early swelling or minor short-term asymmetry.

Vascular complications require urgent action

Accidental injection into a blood vessel is uncommon but can cause tissue loss, blindness or stroke. Unusual severe pain, blanching, grey or blue skin, visual changes or neurological symptoms during or after injection require immediate medical attention. Infection, nodules, allergic reactions and delayed inflammation are additional risks.

Questions patients often ask

Are all dermal fillers reversible?

No. Reversal depends on the filler material. Hyaluronic-acid fillers may be reduced with an enzyme in selected situations, while other materials may be difficult or impossible to remove.

Is filler the same as Botox?

No. Fillers add or support volume in selected areas. Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces activity in selected muscles.

How long will filler last?

It varies with the material, treatment area, amount and individual metabolism. The product-specific information should be discussed before treatment.

What symptoms need urgent help?

Severe or increasing pain, pale or discoloured skin, visual disturbance, weakness, speech difficulty or other neurological symptoms require immediate medical assessment.
