How laser hair reduction works

The laser targets pigment within actively growing hair. Light energy is converted to heat in the follicle, reducing its ability to produce coarse hair while treatment settings are selected to protect the surrounding skin.

Long-pulsed Nd:YAG uses a wavelength that penetrates relatively deeply and is less strongly absorbed by surface pigment than some shorter wavelengths. This can make it a useful option for a range of Indian skin tones, but safe treatment still depends on assessment, calibration and technique.

Assessment before the first session

Hair colour, thickness, density and treatment area are reviewed alongside skin tone, tanning, medicines, hormonal symptoms and previous reactions. Very light, grey or white hair contains little pigment and may respond poorly to laser.

  • Tell the clinician about recent tanning, photosensitising medicines and active skin problems
  • Avoid waxing, threading or plucking before treatment because the follicle target must remain present
  • A patch test or conservative starting setting may be advised
  • Protective eyewear is required for the patient and treatment team

Why several sessions are usually needed

Laser is most effective during the active growth phase, and not every hair is in that phase at the same time. A series of sessions therefore targets successive growth cycles. The interval varies by body area and response rather than following one schedule for everyone.

The realistic endpoint is long-term hair reduction. Finer regrowth and later maintenance sessions may occur, particularly when hormonal factors continue to stimulate new growth.

Aftercare, side effects and safety

Temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling around follicles can occur and often settles within hours. Sun and heat exposure, vigorous exercise and irritating products may need to be limited for the period advised by the clinician.

Burns, blistering and pigment change are uncommon but possible, especially with unsuitable settings, recent tanning or inadequate aftercare. Contact the clinic promptly if pain, blistering or marked colour change develops.

Questions patients often ask

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It is more accurately described as long-term hair reduction. Some regrowth may be finer or lighter, and maintenance can be needed over time.

Is Nd:YAG suitable for darker skin tones?

It is commonly selected because of its relative safety profile for more deeply pigmented skin, but individual assessment and appropriate settings remain essential.

Should I shave before treatment?

The clinic may ask you to shave shortly before the session while avoiding waxing, threading or plucking. Follow the exact preparation instructions provided for your treatment area.

Start with a diagnosis, not a package

A consultation helps the clinical team confirm the concern, discuss suitable options and explain the expected course, limitations and aftercare.
