What a carbon peel involves

A thin carbon suspension is applied to cleansed skin and allowed to settle on the surface. A compatible Q-switched laser is then passed over the treatment area using settings selected for the patient’s skin tone, concern and device. The procedure is different from a chemical peel and from fractional CO₂ resurfacing.

The carbon layer acts as an external target for the laser. Published studies have investigated the technique for acne, pores and surface texture, but protocols and evidence quality vary. It should not be presented as a universal treatment for pigmentation or acne scars.

Assessment and suitability

The clinician reviews active acne, skin sensitivity, recent tanning, pigmentation tendency, medicines, cold sores and previous laser reactions. Inflamed, infected or broken skin may need treatment first. A different pathway may be recommended when deeper acne scars, melasma or another diagnosis is the main concern.

Treatment course and recovery

Warmth, temporary redness, dryness or mild sensitivity can follow treatment. Gentle cleansing, moisturiser and sunscreen are usually prioritised while irritating actives are paused as advised. The number and spacing of sessions depend on the concern and observed response.

Results are variable and maintenance may be required. A carbon peel does not permanently shrink pores, erase acne scars or replace medical acne treatment when prescription care is needed.

Risks and precautions

Possible adverse effects include burns, blistering, prolonged redness, acne flare, lightening or darkening of skin and an unsatisfactory response. Correct device identification, conservative parameters and aftercare are particularly important for pigment-prone skin.

Is a carbon peel the same as a chemical peel?

No. A carbon peel uses a topical carbon suspension with a compatible laser. A chemical peel uses an acid or other chemical agent to produce controlled exfoliation.

Can it remove acne scars?

It may improve selected surface concerns, but deeper or tethered acne scars usually need scar-specific assessment and may require other procedures.

Will one session permanently close pores?

No. Pores cannot be permanently closed, and any visible improvement varies with oil production, skin condition and maintenance.

Can darker skin tones have a carbon peel?

Selected patients may be treated, but skin tone, recent tanning and pigment history must guide laser settings and aftercare.
