Read treatment guideDaily shedding is part of the normal hair cycle. Assessment becomes important when shedding noticeably increases, the part widens, the hairline recedes or bald patches appear. Hair loss is a description, not a diagnosis, and different causes need different treatment plans.
A consultation usually begins with the timing and pattern of loss, family history, health changes, medicines, diet and scalp symptoms. Examination and dermoscopy may help assess follicle density, miniaturisation or inflammation. Blood tests may be advised when the history suggests an underlying deficiency or systemic cause.
The purpose is to identify what is treatable, what may progress and whether the follicles are likely to respond to medical, procedural, surgical or cosmetic options.
Depending on the diagnosis, a plan may include scalp treatment, correction of a deficiency, prescription therapy, PRP or GFC, hair-transplant assessment or non-surgical coverage. These options are not interchangeable, and more than one may be discussed as part of a staged plan.
Sudden patchy loss, rapid thinning, pain, marked redness or scaling, eyebrow loss, scarring, or shedding accompanied by other health symptoms should be assessed instead of treated with a generic product. Early diagnosis can help protect follicles when an active condition is present.
